Simple and Innovative Ideas to Keep Your Garden Tidy All Year

Don’t you just love showing off your garden to visitors and friends?  You spend so much time out there working, and it’s always a treat when someone takes notice and shows an interest in the work you’ve done.

But when you’re taking good care of your plants, they can grow really fast!  Sometimes it can be hard to keep up with them.  And even when your plants are dormant, you can bet that the weeds are still growing strong.

Trying to keep your garden tidy all year long can be overwhelming and even exhausting.  A good lawn vacuum can help a lot, but there is always plenty of other work that needs to be done.

Here are a few quick tricks I’ve learned that have helped me, and I hope they’ll help you too.

Mulch Like Crazy

Mulch, mulch, and more mulch.  The best way to control weeds is to prevent them from coming up in the first place.  Mulch not only prevents weeds, but it also improves the quality of your soil and allows you to water your garden less frequently.

A fresh application of mulch works better than anything else to freshen up the appearance of your garden, so it looks well-manicured… even when it’s not!

Organize Your Tools with a Storage Bench

I need two hoses to reach the furthest corners of my property.  I used to have an extra hose coiled up in the back yard, and it always looked bad.  I would try to hide it behind a shrub or a tree.  But you could still see it if you took a few steps out into the yard.

And do you know what happened in that spot?  You guessed it!  Over time various other garden tools would accumulate in a pile next to that hose – sprinklers, watering cans, weeding tools, and more.  It was always a mess.

The solution I came up with was a storage bench.  I’m the only one who knows that my extra hose and weeding tools are stored inside.  Everyone else thinks it’s a decoration.  Actually, a lot of people have asked to sit on the bench just because it looks so nice!

Plant Even More Plants

Do you have any spots where the weeds keep coming and coming no matter what you do?  I’ll never understand how weeds can grow so fast!

One great way to defeat those pesky weeds is to beat them at their own game.  Plant more of the plants that you do want, and crowd out the weeds until there’s no room left.  Just run a garden tiller over the area, add the plants you want to see and top it off with lots of mulch.

I did this in a sunny spot near my back door where weeds kept coming up again and again.  I planted the area full of vigorous herbs like thyme and oregano, and guess what?  No more weeds!
